Is Your Property Suitable?

Solar Panel Suitability — What to Consider

Solar PV suitability depends on the specific characteristics of your property. This guide covers the key factors reviewed during any solar enquiry — roof direction, roof condition, shading, electrical setup, access, and more. Suitability can only be confirmed after a property-specific review and survey.

Suitability Factors

What affects solar panel suitability

Each factor is reviewed as part of the survey and design process. No two properties are the same.

01

Roof Direction

South-facing roofs receive the most direct sunlight in the UK. East and west orientations can also be suitable depending on roof size and usage profile. North-facing slopes are generally unsuitable for the main array.

02

Roof Pitch

Most roof pitches between 15° and 50° are workable for solar PV. Flat roofs can accommodate solar with appropriate mounting systems. Very steep or very shallow pitches may affect panel placement options.

03

Roof Area

The available roof space determines how many panels can be fitted and therefore the system size. Skylights, roof windows, chimneys, and soil pipes reduce available area.

04

Roof Condition

Solar panels are designed to last decades. The roof they are mounted on should be in reasonable condition before installation to avoid costly removal and refitting later.

05

Shading

Trees, neighbouring buildings, chimneys, and roof structures can shade panels and reduce generation. Shading at certain times of day is common and manageable with appropriate system design.

06

Electrical Setup

The existing consumer unit, electrical board, and available space for an inverter are all reviewed during survey. Some properties require electrical upgrades as part of or before solar installation.

07

Access & Scaffolding

Safe rooftop access is required for installation. Most residential roofs require standard scaffolding. Commercial, agricultural, and unusual properties may have specific access requirements.

08

Battery Storage

Battery storage interest can be discussed as part of system design, subject to electrical requirements, available space, energy use profile, and product suitability at the time of enquiry.

Property Types

Suitability by property type

Domestic, commercial, and agricultural properties each have different suitability profiles.

Residential

  • Most common roof types: tiles, slate
  • South-facing pitch most preferred
  • Loft or garage inverter placement typical
  • Household energy use shapes system size
  • Battery storage can be discussed
  • Consumer unit reviewed at survey

Commercial

  • Flat and profiled metal roofs common
  • Larger roof areas available
  • Three-phase electrical supply in some buildings
  • Daytime energy use shapes suitability
  • Operational access considered
  • System monitoring typically included
Commercial solar enquiries →

Agricultural

  • Profiled metal and fibre cement roofs typical
  • Structural condition reviewed carefully
  • Rural electrical infrastructure varies
  • Operational access around farm activities
  • Battery storage reviewed per operation
  • Each enquiry reviewed individually

Before You Enquire

How to prepare for a solar enquiry

The more information you can share about your property, the more useful the initial review can be. You do not need to know all of these things before enquiring — but any detail helps.

01 Property type and location
02 Roof size and approximate pitch
03 Roof material and condition
04 Roof orientation (direction)
05 Shading from trees or buildings
06 Existing electrical setup
07 Access and scaffolding requirements
08 Battery storage interest
09 Estimated electricity use
10 Preferred timescale
Honest Suitability Guidance

Suitability is property-specific — not assumed

Solar panel suitability cannot be confirmed without reviewing specific property information and, where appropriate, carrying out a survey. Midlands Solar Solutions does not make blanket suitability claims, guarantee energy output, or assume that every property is suitable for solar PV.

If your property is reviewed and found to be unsuitable, or if roof condition, shading, electrical constraints, or access make installation impractical, this will be communicated clearly.

Ready to review your property's solar suitability?

Submit a solar enquiry with as much detail as you can about your property, roof, and energy use. All enquiries reviewed around specific property information — subject to survey.
